Looking for permanent housing: where to look and what to check
In Nanaimo, you can find all kinds of accommodation: apartments, detached houses, or shared apartments. The most common places to find rentals are Facebook Marketplace and local real estate agencies.
Credit score
During your search, you will likely be asked to provide a credit score.
There are no miracle solutions for newcomers. If you don't have a credit score, it's best to explain the situation and be prepared to provide references (testimonials from former landlords) or proof of sufficient funds (three months would be a minimum). Living with roommates for a while can also help!
For more information, see administrative procedures.
To be verified before signing
- Security deposit: up to half a month's rent to be paid before moving in and refunded if the property is in good condition. If you have a pet, a pet deposit (max. half a month's rent) may also be required.
- Rent: check the amount, payment date, and what is included (energy, internet, parking, maintenance, etc.).
- Home insurance: Many landlords require home insurance before signing the lease. It protects you and your personal belongings.
- The lease agreement: read it carefully before signing to understand your rights and obligations. Ask for advice if you have any doubts, or consult this provincial government webpage.
