Get a BC driver’s licence
Why is a driver's license essential in Canada?
Having a driver's license is a real asset when settling in Canada:
- Make your daily trips easier (work, shopping, administrative tasks).
- Explore the region freely and discover the province's unique landscapes.
- Increase your professional opportunities, as many employers require a valid license.
- Simplify your move, especially outside of large cities where public transportation is limited.
🚗 Please
note: Plan your travel carefully. Distances here are long and often surprise newcomers.
Exchanging or transferring your driver's license: how does it work?
Depending on your country of origin, there are two options:
License exchange
Some countries have an agreement with Canada. In this case, you can exchange your foreign license for a Canadian license without having to take a test.
New procedure
If no agreement exists, you will need to follow the complete procedure, including:
- A written test on Canadian traffic laws;
- A practical driving test;
- Administrative procedures with ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia).
Good to know
- The Canadian driver's license is an official form of identification that is often required for administrative procedures, during which you will regularly be asked to present two forms of photo identification.
- The sooner you begin the process, the sooner you will be independent.
- If you plan to stay in BC for a long time, exchanging or obtaining your license quickly is a real asset to your integration.
If you don't want to drive, there are other options!
